Department of Organic Chemistry
The department's research focuses on the synthesis and structural elucidation of O,N,S-heterocycles of natural origin and potential biological activity in the field of alkaloids, carbohydrates, flavonoids and nucleosides. This research is concerned with the elaboration of new methodologies for the synthesis of these natural products and related compounds, with structural and stereochemical investigation of heterocyclic compounds by means of spectroscopic methods (NMR, IR, MS, CD) and with study of the mechanism of the transformations leading to O,N,S-heterocycles.
In addition to the above topics, studies are conducted by intensive cooperation with pharmacenutical industry in the areas of pharmacology, to get clear correlation about the structure-biological activity relationship of the O,N,S-heterocycles of natural origin.
The Department of Organic Chemistry offers a stimulating and diversified program of graduate education leading to either an M.S. or Ph.D. degree. The program, aimed at granting a chemist diploma to the students participating in the ten-semester training, is in full harmony with the expectation and requirements of modern education. The Department strongly encourages undergraduate students to join the research program, and there is also an opportunity - after graduation - to enroll in the following post-graduate program to obtain the Ph.D. degree during a training period of 3-4 years.
